The skills that artificial intelligence can’t replace may also be key to managing the technology as it evolves, according to a recent Resume Now analysis of O*NET data.
Resume Now took O*NET importance ratings for 21 cognitive abilities and showcased 10 that had an “importance score” of 3.00 or higher across all occupations examined. O*NET’s rating scale ranges from 1 to 5.
The top two skills — oral comprehension and oral expression — showcased the importance of understanding, synthesizing and communicating information. Problem sensitivity and deductive reasoning, also on the list, pointed to the ability to recognize and solve problems, while several other skills highlighted other forms of communication and information processing.
These “durable skills” continue to be in high demand by employers of all industries and usually signal that a worker is highly effective, an expert previously told HR Dive. And while data literacy skills are now considered as fundamental as the ability to write, per a report from DataCamp published earlier this year, various studies indicate that real success in the AI age will come from human intelligence guiding AI.
For example, workers that treated AI tools as collaborators that needed direction and insight tended to perform better than those who simply delegated tasks to it — a reflection of how people used their knowledge rather than the knowledge itself, according to a study from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin and accounting firm KPMG.
Recruiters have run into skills shortages that may help workers be productive alongside AI, including a lack of grit, emotional intelligence and management skills, according to the Graduate Management Admission Council. And generally, employers may not be training their workers in the appropriate skills for potential AI disruption, The Conference Board said in a recent report.
That means employers may have an opportunity to guide fundamental upskilling for their workers as the tech changes quickly.
