Managing personalities can be a big part of an HR person’s job — though as important as personality is, it’s not easy to quantify its effect in the workplace.

For example, worker personality can matter more than skills in certain situations, according to a recent Express Employment Professionals-Harris Poll survey. The right personality, hiring decision-makers said, could outweigh a skills gap, particularly if an applicant displays work ethic and a willingness to learn. But discerning this in interviews tends to rely on informal interactions and situational questions.

Notably, many people feel they must adjust their personalities to be present at work in the first place and that doing so is an important skill, according to another Express survey. That may be in part because, in times of stress, certain “successful” personality traits can instead turn into personal derailers if employees aren’t aware of them.
