Typical change management plans are actively attempting to tackle resistance and disengagement, which can be complex, costly, and time-consuming. When leaders foster a culture of adaptability and collaboration, “change management” becomes a different, far less daunting activity. Strategy sets the direction, but the leader buy-in determines the level of engagement that will either drive success or fuel failure. Leaders should:

• Invest in the development of individual leaders AND cohesive, high-functioning leadership teams

• Equip leaders with training in trust-building, effective communication, and emotional intelligence

• Develop a toolkit for leaders that includes guidance on addressing employee concerns, managing ambiguity, and maintaining transparent communication

• Establish—and commit to—engaging in regular forums or pulse checks where employees feel safe to share ideas and feedback

Individual Level

At the individual level, change enablement equips employees with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a dynamic environment. Leaders must prioritize psychological safety and show genuine concern for employees’ well-being before encouraging individuals to embrace change as a positive force. Leaders should:

• Provide employees with learning opportunities that provide insight into their mindsets about change and how they can become more agile

• Invest in tools that enable ongoing communication and engagement between leaders and employees

However, not even the most beautiful and thorough change management plans can deliver true behavioral change if they are not being driven by trusted and capable leaders.
